The house, although originally built around 1750, is fully modernised. There is a spacious living room with comfortable soft furnishings and an interesting library which include books about Scotland and the Hebrides. The adjoining kitchen galley is fully equipped and leads on to the dining area where you can enjoy your meal or, on one of our glorious evenings you can eat outside on the sunny south facing patio and garden area. There are two bedrooms upstairs, one with an adjoining dressing room, and a single bedroom downstairs with additional pull out bed under. The bathroom upstairs has a bath, shower and toilet and there is a double shower room and further toilet downstairs. Vallay House is at the corner of a dry stane walled garden and the sitting area at the back faces South and is very sheltered. Access to the machair land and glorious Atlantic beach is a few minutes walk away on the West coast of Harris. Highland Cattle and Blackface Sheep are on the Thirty acre working croft surrounding Vallay House and there is a trout loch quarter of an hours hill walk away. There is an excellent 9 hole links golf course one mile away accessible on a daily basis. In addition to tourism, the economy of Harris also depends on fishing; local boats go out for shellfish. Harris tweed is also made locally and there are many handmade and knitted garments for sale in the townships. Crofting is a way of life, hence the annual sheep dog trials held in mid summer. There are several places for eating out and both Leverburgh and Tarbert have small well stocked mini markets. Fresh island lamb and beef is available at the local butchers. Of course the above mentioned shellfish is also available. 4star quality self-catering accommodation. |
